Visual effects house Weta Digital collaborated with Epic Games to help guide development of the new real-time strand-based hair system in Unreal Engine. The result is Meerkat, a short film rendered entirely in Unreal Engine that showcases how far it’s possible to push movie-quality hair, fur, and feathers for linear storytelling using real-time tools. 

In this webinar, Weta Senior Digital Artist Nathan Farquhar will take you through Weta’s workflow for realistic feathers and hair, from the basics of creating a strand-based groom, to exporting from DCC applications into Unreal Engine and optimizing the asset for the best performance.

You’ll learn about: 
  • The strand-based workflow for hair and fur
  • How Weta created the grooms for the meerkat and eagle in Meerkat
  • The process of exporting from DCC and setting up in Unreal Engine
  • Optimizations for using film-level grooms in real time
