Please note that Cineware by Maxon only works with Unreal Engine 5.1 and beyond and requires Cinema 4D 2024 and beyond. 

The Cineware by Maxon plugin allows you to import Cinema 4D files quickly and easily into Unreal Engine by translating .c4d files via Datasmith into the Unreal Engine, generating the scene on-the-fly, eliminating the need for Cineware caches. Thanks to the flexibility this offers, there's a new option to modify Cinema 4D attributes directly within the Unreal Editor.

Recent Changes:

  • 2024.3 (Feb) - The Datasmith Direct Link for Cinema 4D has undergone significant performance enhancements. Transferring geometry-loaded scenes without the need for intermediate saving is now even faster, providing greater flexibility in your workflow. Additionally, we've introduced updates to support the transfer of animations, further enhancing the feature set of the plugin.
  • 2024.2 (Dec) - Cineware by Maxon comes now with a Datasmith Direct Link plugin for Cinema 4D. Sending your Cinema 4D project to Unreal has become easier and faster than ever before. There is no need for intermediate saving and loading of your c4d scene anymore. The data is transferred to the Unreal Engine directly using the local cache, allowing you to see the changes you’ve just made almost instantly.
  • 2024.1 (Nov) - Cineware by Maxon now features an improved import of Cinema 4D files into Unreal Engine. Additionally, Redshift materials with subsurface scattering are now supported. The texture size can be adjusted before every import, allowing for more flexibility in managing your texture quality.

Technical Details

Cineware by Maxon currently supports:

  • Redshift Materials rudimentary support
  • Import / Reimport while not overwriting changes made in Unreal
  • Animations (transforms and render visibility)
  • StaticMeshes
  • GeometryCaches (import any PSR or morph animation)
  • Materials
  • Lights
  • Cameras (ISO, shutter speed, F-stop, aspect ratio)


Known Issues

  • On OSX with an active VPN Unreal might not see Direct Link sources
  • Synching area lights can cause issues
