Unreal Engine Simulation Brings Dementia into Focus

作者 Unreal Engine

Developed by Opaque Multimedia for Alzheimer’s Australia using the free Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the Virtual Dementia Experience (VDE) is a unique simulation designed to teach users what it’s like to face the frustrations and struggles of living with dementia.

Housed at the Melbourne-based Perc Walkley Dementia Learning Centre, the simulator allows elder care employees, facility designers, and even family members to experience first-hand the typical morning routine of a dementia patient, from locating the bathroom to showering and shaving.

Opaque’s Norman Wang discusses how his team has successfully utilized Unreal Engine technology for serious games development and explains how typical video game design methodologies can also translate into improved space design for the elderly in real life.
