UE devs can now choose to train AI Models on their projects

We’ve updated the Unreal Engine End User License Agreement (EULA) so developers can choose to train AI models on their Unreal Engine and MetaHuman projects. This will enable AI models to better understand your content and support development. This change doesn’t grant Epic any rights to your content or code.

What’s changed in the new EULA

We’ve deleted two restrictions from Section 6e (General Restrictions) of the EULA which apply to all versions of Unreal Engine:
  • The restriction on using Unreal Engine, including its source code, as a training input to any generative AI program, or as prompt-based input where the program trains on that input.
  • The restriction on using MetaHuman digital characters and animation curves, or rendered output made to replicate MetaHuman functionality, to build or enhance a database or to train or test AI, machine learning, deep learning, or neural network technologies.

How to accept the new EULA

New users will be prompted to accept the new EULA automatically.

If you already use Unreal Engine, you can choose to accept the new EULA at any time on the Unreal Engine EULA acceptance page.

FAQs

If I accept the new EULA, what does it mean for me?
You can use Unreal Engine, including its source code, and the content you create with it, for AI training

Does this give Epic Games the right to train AI on my game or assets?
No. The update removes a restriction on you as an Unreal Engine licensee. It doesn’t grant Epic any rights to your content or code.

Does the update apply to current users or only new users?
Both. New users are prompted with the new EULA automatically. Existing Unreal Engine and MetaHuman users can choose to accept it on the acceptance page.

Can I train AI models using outputs from MetaHuman Creator, MetaHuman Animator, and Mesh to MetaHuman?
Yes, MetaHuman Creator, MetaHuman Animator, and Mesh to MetaHuman are licensed under the Unreal Engine EULA.

Does this change anything for Fab assets?
No. Sellers can still choose whether to allow AI training on their content by using the “NoAI” tag.

Does this apply to islands developers build for Fortnite?
No. Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), Verse code, and island content fall under the Fortnite Developer Rules and the Fortnite Developer Terms, not the Unreal Engine EULA.

I have a custom license agreement with Epic. Does this change apply to me?
Your agreement governs your use of Unreal Engine. If it includes similar restrictions, reach out to your Epic representative and we'll walk you through the options
