Real-time technology is set to transform the automotive industry. Many of the world’s foremost automotive manufacturers already use real-time workflows for everything from design concepting to optimizing factory configuration.

As the creators of Unreal Engine, we work with automotive manufacturers every day to help them achieve specific objectives in their pipeline and customize the engine for different automotive use cases.

With a bird's-eye view of how major players are innovating using real-time technology across the industry, we have a unique opportunity to provide a map of all the different ways this technology can be leveraged by automotive manufacturers.

That’s why we’ve created the Automotive Field Guide: a comprehensive manual that outlines how Unreal Engine can be the holistic open platform that covers the entire automotive pipeline from end to end.

Exploring real-time technology across the automotive pipeline

The Automotive Field Guide outlines the key areas of the automotive pipeline in which real-time technology can be leveraged. It looks at the problems the technology can help solve in these verticals, and the new opportunities it presents for car manufacturers to capitalize on.

For those eager to get started imminently, we explore one of the crucial first steps: ingesting data. We explain how the many different types of data created over the course of the automotive production pipeline can be imported into Unreal Engine.

We’ll then take a deep dive into different automotive departments to find out how teams can leverage Unreal Engine for specific workflows and processes.

And finally, we’ll take a look at how some of the biggest car brands in the world are leveraging Unreal Engine across their businesses, for everything from concepting and design to autonomous vehicle simulation to selling cars on the dealership floor.

HMI, new automotive features…and much more

It’s an exciting time for Unreal Engine enthusiasts in the automotive industry. In addition to the release of the Automotive Field Guide, we’ve recently announced our HMI initiative, with a raft of features to create best-in-class automotive HMI, infotainment, and digital cockpit experiences.

On top of that, Unreal Engine 4.26 is coming very soon. This release will bring a number of exciting updates for the automotive community, including enhanced high-quality media output with support for exporting render passes, new volumetric clouds for exterior shots, and an extended Collaborative Viewer template with voice-to-voice communication over VOIP.

And you can now watch the replay of our recently broadcast episode of The Pulse, which saw BMW Group and Ferrari join Epic Games to discuss how digital assets are changing the way cars are designed and sold.

Stay tuned for more exciting developments, as we’ll be revealing more automotive news in the coming months!
