Nanite & Virtual Shadow Maps

Massively detailed worlds

Create games and worlds with massive amounts of geometric detail with Nanite, a virtualized micropolygon geometry system, and Virtual Shadow Maps.

Directly import and replicate multi-million-polygon meshes while maintaining a real-time frame rate—even at 60 fps—without any noticeable loss of fidelity.

These systems intelligently stream and process only the detail you can perceive, largely removing poly count and draw call constraints.

Lumen

Dynamic global illumination and reflections

Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination and reflections solution that enables indirect lighting to adapt on the fly to changes to direct lighting or geometry—for example, changing the sun’s angle with the time of day or opening an exterior door. 

With Lumen, you no longer have to author lightmap UVs, wait for lightmaps to bake, or place reflection captures; what you see inside the Unreal Editor is what you get on console. 

Temporal Super Resolution

Quality or performance? Why choose?

Players of next-generation consoles expect frame rates of 60 fps or more on high-resolution displays, putting an enormous strain on rendering resources.

Temporal Super Resolution (TSR), a built-in, platform-independent, high-quality upsampling system, enables the engine to render at much lower resolution but with similar output pixel fidelity to frames rendered at a higher resolution.

World Partition

Bigger, better Open Worlds

Easily manage your levels with World Partition, a system that automatically divides the world into a grid and streams only the necessary cells. 

Team members can simultaneously work on the same region of the same World, thanks to a One File Per Actor system, while with Data Layers, you can create different variations of the same World—such as day and night versions—as layers that exist in the same space.

Characters & animation

Animation in context

With UE5’s built-in artist-friendly animation authoring toolset, you can iterate faster and more accurately, with less need to round-trip with DCC tools.

Quickly create rigs in Control Rig and pose and animate your characters in Sequencer, or retarget existing animations. You can even use machine learning to achieve high-quality real-time deformations. 

Then, dynamically adjust animations at runtime to compensate for different gameplay scenarios, such as varying speed or terrain.

Modeling

Asset development on the spot

Unreal Engine 5 includes an extensive and constantly expanding built-in modeling toolset, including mesh editing, geometry scripting, UV creation and editing, and baking and mesh attributes.

With these tools, artists can develop and iterate on assets—including dense meshes, such as those generated using photogrammetry tools or by kitbashing—directly within the Unreal Editor, saving time and reducing the potential for errors. 

MetaSounds

Procedural audio design

MetaSounds is a high-performance system that offers complete control over audio DSP graph generation of sound sources, letting you manage all aspects of audio rendering to drive next-generation procedural audio experiences.

Analogous to the Material Editor, the system is fully programmable, bringing benefits such as dynamic data-driven assets, the ability to map game parameters to sound playback, huge workflow improvements, and much more.

Stack'O'Bot

Stack’O’Bot is a small sandbox project that shows all the new features of Unreal Engine 5 in a practical vertical slice. Paired with our learning path content that guides you through each facet of the project, this demo has everything a new developer needs to get started, while also providing a handy toolbox for more experienced indies to sink their teeth into.

Lyra Starter Game

Lyra Starter Game is a sample gameplay project built alongside Unreal Engine 5 development to serve as an excellent starting point for creating new games for more advanced developers, as well as a hands-on learning resource. We plan to continue to upgrade this living project with future releases to demonstrate our latest best practices.

City Sample

The City Sample is a free downloadable sample project that reveals how the city scene from The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience was built. The project—which consists of a complete city with buildings, vehicles, and crowds of MetaHuman characters—demonstrates how we used new and improved systems in Unreal Engine 5 to create the experience.

This course will introduce you to the high-level basics of Unreal Engine 5.2 and the editor used to work within it. We’ll look at how to add assets, create lighting, make Blueprints, and even share your project.

Unreal Engine 5

No. Unreal Engine 5 remains free to download, and comes fully loaded and production-ready out of the box, with every feature and full source code access included. 

As was the case for UE4, under the terms of the standard EULA, UE5 is free to use for learning, and for developing internal projects; it also enables you to distribute many commercial projects without paying any fees to Epic Games, including custom projects delivered to clients, linear content (such as films and television shows) and any product that earns no revenue or whose revenue falls below the royalty threshold. 

A 5% royalty is due only if you are distributing an off-the-shelf product that incorporates Unreal Engine code (such as a game) and the lifetime gross revenue from that product exceeds $1 million USD; in this case, the first $1 million remains royalty-exempt.

Unreal Engine 5 enables you to deploy projects to Windows PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, macOS, iOS, Android, ARKit, ARCore, OpenXR, SteamVR, Oculus, Linux, and SteamDeck. You can run the Unreal Editor on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch console tools and code are available at no additional cost to developers who are registered developers for their respective platform(s).
Unreal Engine 5.1 is backward-compatible with projects created in Unreal Engine 4.26, 4.27, UE5 Early Access, and Unreal Engine 5.0. Please note that some UE4 plugins have been discontinued and projects that were dependent on them might not work out of the box if opened in Unreal Engine 5.0 or 5.1.
