Preparing Engineering Data

This course explores importing CAD data to Unreal Engine via Datasmith. Learn how to correct geometry and Material issues in applications like 3ds Max, how to organize and set pivot points, and more.

Overview

Using CAD data with Datasmith offers direct import of many of the engineering industry-standard design applications. In In "Preparing Engineering Data for Optimization and Real-Time Performance", Paul Neale will take you through the steps of correcting geometry and Material issues using DCC (Digital Content Creation) applications like 3ds Max as well as how to rename, organize, and set pivots points to work as expected in Unreal Engine.

You will learn how to:

  • Identify how the Datasmith pipeline manages assets from third-party DCC applications.
  • Utilize tools and methods available to repair and optimize geometry for a more responsive real-time experience.
  • Create and handle UV layouts, lightmap UVs, level of detail methods, collision objects, and basic lighting tools.
  • Execute scripts to improve efficiency in the workflow.
