The Project Titan Sample Game is now available: explore this huge open world

GamesLearningProject Titan

We’re pleased to announce the Project Titan Sample Game is now available to download!

If you’re not familiar with Project Titan, it was a unique challenge that posed a simple question—what would happen if we got thousands of artists and developers together for one epic collaborative art jam?

The answer to that question saw over 4,000 challengers sign up to contribute to Titan's spectacular open world landscape, 64 square kilometers in size, comprising nine different biomes packed full of imaginative characters and assets.

Now, that world is open to you to explore and learn from. Check out the sizzle reel below to find out what you can expect to discover in the sample.

We’d like to give a big shout out to all those who participated in the art jam—you rock. You can check out some of the stunning work contributed by these talented artists in ArtStation’s Project Titan Art Blast.

Creating Project Titan

We’ve put together a guided tour of Titan to showcase some of the interesting ways Unreal Engine was put to use on the project. Watch the video and discover different areas you might want to explore when you download the sample.

Creating a world with 4,000 strangers

At Unreal Fest Prague, Project Titan’s creator Arran Langmead presented a retrospective on the global art jam, exploring the intricacies of having your team size grow from four to 4,000 over a weekend, the infrastructure behind running such an operation, and what the game art community can learn from the project.

Project Titan: Building An Open World Game in Public

At Unreal Fest Seattle, Project Titan's technical designer Samuel Bass presented a deep dive into the ways Project Titan was optimized and organized, giving detailed talk that covered everything from the underlying UE5 tech powering the project —including Nanite, Landmass, and Mover—to how to clean up the project when your 4,000 person art jam has ended.

Feedback livestreams

Throughout the art jam, we hosted weekly livestreams where we explored the project, answered community questions, and gave feedback on the artwork created.

Special guests joined us from different areas of the industry to give their take on the project over the course of eighteen hours of feedback sessions. You can check the recordings of the feedback livestreams on our YouTube playlist.

Training videos

Over the course of the project’s ten weeks, Epic and game industry experts provided participants with support through 56 training videos that covered many areas of game development.

Those videos are gold dust for anyone looking to create expansive open worlds, with tips, tricks and nuggets of advice straight from the minds of game development professionals. You can watch the tutorial recordings on the Epic Developer Community—use them as a tool to learn the ropes and sharpen your world building skills.

That’s all for now—we hope you enjoy exploring the sample project and sifting through the learning content.
