What happens in the Unreal Fellowship: Games?


This rigorous three-week virtual program is designed for those who want to learn and understand the process involved in creating a game with Unreal Engine. 

The Unreal Fellowship pairs participants with mentors and offers online support from industry specialists. The combination of mentors and industry specialists helps to guide participants through the entire process of producing a functioning game with Unreal Engine—from concept and art style to delivering the final package.

During select online lectures, we’ll also host industry guest speakers who’ll provide additional insights into how Unreal Engine is being used in professional AAA game development.

Who is the Unreal Fellowship: Games for?


The Unreal Fellowship: Games is open to experienced professionals in the gaming industry, including:
 
  • Game designers and art directors 
  • Lead programmers, technical artists, and gameplay developers
  • Environment artists and level designers
  • Character artists, texture artists, animators, and modelers
  • UI designers


The program is designed for participants who are currently working in the games industry but are new to Unreal Engine.
 

What will I learn from the Unreal Fellowship: Games?


Our instructors will guide you toward mastering the following skills:
 
  • Programing using the Blueprint visual scripting system and its integration mechanisms
  • Creating custom shaders that react to gameplay
  • Developing a distinctive art style that unifies the project’s visual aspects
  • Producing advanced Niagara visual effects that interact dynamically with gameplay
  • Efficiently filling environments using procedural content generation (PCG) tools
  • Using lighting techniques to achieve specific atmospheric conditions
  • Optimizing and packaging games for final production.
 

What kind of game will we be making?


Paying tribute to the origins of gaming, we’ve chosen arcade games as the theme for this Fellowship. The theme was selected to encourage participants to experiment with diverse styles and innovative gameplay, with a focus on simplicity, engagement, and manageable project sizes for completion within a month.
 

When does the Unreal Fellowship: Games begin?


For those in North American time zones, the Unreal Fellowship: Games will run from March 24 to April 11, 2025, 10 AM – 7 PM EDT (UTC -4). 

For participants in the UK and European time zones, the program will run from May 6 to May 23, 2025, 9 AM to 6 PM CEST (UTC +2). 
 

How do I apply for Unreal Fellowship: Games?


Follow the link at the bottom of this page. Participants will need to meet the below prerequisites and should work in the video game disciplines previously mentioned.
 
  • You must have a minimum of three years’s experience in creating games.
  • You must have worked on at least one published game.
  • You must be able to provide a portfolio of work.
