Kokomo’s High-End Mobile RPG ‘Project: Overlord’ Being Powered by UE4
High-quality, scalable mobile development in Unreal Engine 4 was on display during GDC 2017 in the form of Netmarble’s Lineage 2: Revolution, which exceeded $176 million in revenue and gained more than 5 million active users within one month of release in Korea alone thanks to beautiful visuals, a persistent open world, and massive-scale battles that support 200 players in real time.
The upcoming Project: Overlord looks to continue this trend and is another example of Unreal Engine’s impact on mobile game development moving forward.
Developed by Kokomo, which was formed in December 2015 around Gon Namkung, chief designer of NCSOFT’s flagship title Lineage: 2, along with veteran members from NCSOFT, NEXON and Neowiz, Project: Overlord is a fantasy medieval RPG that focuses on unit control. With 30 different heroes categorized in six classes (Assassin, Warrior, Mage, Support, Tanker and Dealer), Project: Overlord provides players with countless options for constructing their decks to compliment the AAA-quality visuals in the palm of their hand.
Paired with an extensive single-player mode, Project: Overlord will offer various types of real-time and AI-controlled PvP, raids as well as additional contents to fuel a competitive matching system.
With deep knowledge of developing and operating top-tier MMORPG titles, Kokomo decided to develop its first title with Unreal Engine 4 to create a visually stunning gaming experience for mobile devices.
To optimize the experience on mobile, the developers are utilizing the extensibility of Unreal Engine 4 to add features such as GUI texture atlasing, particle culling, and mobile 8-sample SSAO while implementing technologies supported by the latest version.
Project: Overlord is scheduled to launch in 2017 in Korea with plans of a worldwide release to follow. For more information on the project, visit http://www.kokomogames.co.kr/.
