One More Level S.A. is based in Kraków, Poland where it develops high-quality video games for consoles and PC. The studio was created in 2014 and has been growing ever since, adding to its content portfolio and team of specialists including both seasoned veterans and talented newcomers to the game development field. Every day, they strive to forge their passion for gaming into increasingly high-quality games.
Based in Krakow, Poland, developer One More Level has spent over a decade crafting a wide variety of daring and unique gaming experiences for PC and console. From 2014’s strategy-infused arcade side-scroller Deadlings to 2019’s graphic, over-the-top shoot-'em-up God’s Trigger, One More Level certainly doesn’t suffer from a lack of originality.

Most recently, the team of roughly 60 people used Unreal Engine 4 to craft 2020’s Ghostrunner and 2023’s Ghostrunner 2, which offer a unique blend of one-hit-one-kill mechanics, parkour, and cyberpunk aesthetics designed to fulfill every fan’s fast-paced fantasy of being an elite cyber-ninja.
Now, the team at One More Level are digging deep into Unreal Engine 5’s most modern tools while taking players back in time to 19th-century Europe in Valor Mortis—an all-new first-person action Soulslike where players rise from death as a former soldier of Napoleon’s army to wield supernatural powers, battle horrifying monsters, and unravel a conspiracy that threatens all of humanity.

How’s that for originality?

So, what type of research went into crafting the locations, weapons, and even outfits based on an alternate 19th-century Europe, and how did UE5 help bring these elements to life? Also, how did specific UE5 features such as Nanite, Lumen, and Niagara help craft the game’s Metroidvania-inspired levels and dynamic visual effects? We caught up with the studio’s Technical Director, Krzysztof Dalton Pachulski, to find out.
