The Unreal Engine community continued to raise the bar for VFX over this past year, with nominees realizing a range of new and imaginative stories through mesmerizing blockbuster features, intimate VR shorts, stunning episodic series, and immersive IRL attractions.
This year’s Unreal Engine-powered VES Award winners include ILM’s team behind “The Mandalorian,” which utilized Unreal Engine for capturing in-camera visual effects, and teams from “Game of Thrones,” whose incredible work was informed by detailed previz created by The Third Floor. See a full list of the winners here.
Additionally, Unreal Engine-powered VES Award 2020 nominees included the breathtaking VR short “Myth: A Frozen Tale” from Disney Animation, the immersive escapades of ILMxLAB’s “Vader Immortal,” and more stunning work.

Each of these spectacular projects show that the lines between real and digital are blurring–not just for audiences, but also on set. With real-time tools, the traditional linear production pipeline is shifting into a more fluid and collaborative process from start to finish. Virtual production allows for all departments to get a better sense of the final shots much earlier in the creative process, empowering teams to align on creative decisions faster–utilizing methods such as virtual location scouting, or replacing green screens with photoreal LED walls. You can get a foundational understanding of virtual production and the ways it can be implemented in our Virtual Production Field Guide, a wide-ranging industry resource.
As more and more filmmakers and artists are adopting Unreal Engine to achieve final pixel quality earlier in the creative process, we are thrilled to partner with industry leaders such as ILM, The Third Floor, Halon, Framestore, Disney Animation, and many other studios and artists to power their ambitious virtual production pipelines.
Congratulations to all the nominees and winners!
