Epic Games receives 2020 Engineering Emmy Award for Unreal Engine

October 30, 2020
Tonight the Television Academy celebrated the recipients of its 72nd Engineering Emmy Awards, and we at Epic Games are humbled to have been recognized for Unreal Engine! We are especially grateful to our partners and customers, spanning over 150 television networks all over the world, for utilizing the power of real-time technology.

The Engineering Emmys are presented annually to individuals, companies, or organizations for their critical improvements or innovations in broadcast technology that fundamentally impact the production, recording, transmission, or reception of television. This year’s ceremony, hosted by Criminal Minds star Kirsten Vangsness, recognized nine companies and five individuals with a special emphasis on tools that facilitated remote production during this unprecedented year.

Epic Games Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney accepted the second Emmy Award for Unreal Engine, which first received a Technology and Engineering Emmy from sister organization the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2018.

You can check out a few of the spectacular uses of Unreal Engine in broadcast and television in our 2020 Engineering Emmy acceptance reel:

We are continually awed by the creative and innovative ways in which storytellers are using Unreal Engine to drive mixed reality segments, virtual production, high-end graphics integration, and so much more. The Weather Channel continues to be a broadcast pioneer with their team’s commitment to mixed reality educational programming that visually transports viewers inside extreme weather events. FOX has been able to quickly and safely adapt multiple productions during the pandemic lockdown, with hit reality competition The Masked Singer introducing real-time animated character creation in collaboration with DNA Block; FOX Sports partnered with Silver Spoon animation to recreate the energy of a full Major League Baseball stadium with dynamic virtual fans.

Finally, Possible Productions and Riot Games recently pulled off live in-camera visual effects for this year’s League of Legends World Championship, filming the competition on a dazzling LED stage.

Thank you to the Television Academy for this recognition, and congratulations to our fellow honorees. And thank you as always to our community, partners, and all creators who help drive the state of the art forward.
