Dungeon Defenders

By Unreal Engine

Dungeon Defenders injects tower defense gameplay with role-playing elements, delivering a popular experience on myriad platforms, from Xbox LIVE Arcade to smartphones and tablets.

Developed with Unreal Engine 3, Dungeon Defenders started out as a simple UDK demo and has morphed into a bestselling downloadable game for Trendy Entertainment.

When Trendy Entertainment began working with Epic prior to release of the Unreal Development Kit in 2009, its simple game, Dungeon Defense, was a fun demonstration of an engaging, accessible RPG experience that’s possible to develop with the free edition of Unreal Engine 3.

Interest for the game surged upon release of the free demo, and full-on development commenced, including Android game development.

Dungeon Defenders was the first game ever certified for Honeycomb, Google’s tablet-centric OS, and it shipped pre-loaded on the Motorola Xoom. Thanks to Dungeon Defenders, Unreal Engine 3 was the first middleware publicly demonstrated on the Xperia Play, also known informally as Sony’s PlayStation phone.

Released for iOS, Android, Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network and Steam, Dungeon Defenders is one of today’s most accessible, up and coming online RPG action games.

Within a year of the game's debut on mobile, Dungeon Defenders has more than 150,000 downloads on iOS and more than 2 million downloads on Android Marketplace, in addition to untold numbers from pre-installation on Motorola Xoom and Xperia Play.

Within two months of its PC debut, Dungeon Defenders sold more than 500,000 copies on Steam. At the time of this writing (December 2011), the game has just launched on consoles, with more than 120,000 copies sold.
“The game has been a smashing success for Trendy,” said Jeremy Stieglitz, the studio’s development director and Unreal Engine 3 licensee. “Starting with our initial Unreal Development Kit prototype, and then developing Dungeon Defenders for many devices with Unreal Engine 3, points the way to an exciting multi-platform future for independent game developers.”
