With operational studios in Warsaw, Barcelona, Bucharest, and the United States, CI Games is an independent, global video game developer and publisher that has been creating titles recognized worldwide for over 20 years.
Following up on 2023’s Lords of the Fallen, developer CI Games is looking to take all aspects of the experience to the next level with the ambitious and highly-anticipated Lords of the Fallen II—a dark fantasy action RPG featuring brutal, soulslike combat that challenges players to explore a vast, war-torn kingdom crumbling from within.
After generating a ton of buzz and firmly establishing a foundation for the future of the franchise, the team’s mission this time around is to push everything in the game one step further. To achieve this, the developers have taken the approach of wielding Unreal Engine 5 like a weapon, delivering the game’s atmospheric visuals, visceral combat, and unique Umbral lamp dual world mechanic that immerses players in both the realms of the living and the dead.
So, how do key UE5 features like Lumen light up the experience and how has the process of building dual worlds evolved with Unreal Engine’s Procedural Content Generation (PCG) Framework? Also, how does the Gameplay Abilities System create more autonomy for the development team and how was Epic Online Services leveraged as a singular solution to connect players across multiple platforms for a seamless co-op experience? We connected with CI Games’ Game Director James Lowe, Lead Gameplay Programmer David Solar, and Online Gameplay Producer Tamara Moss to shed some light on the project.
