Performance capture gives filmmakers, game developers, and other creatives the opportunity to bring an actor’s full range of skills to a digital character. While motion capture has been around for a long time, historically it was used only to capture the broader motions of the body. Now these systems are sensitive enough to capture subtle details in the face and fingers, effectively capturing the actor’s entire performance.

In the meantime, real-time technology has continued to evolve, making it possible to capture and target such performances on the fly. Using performance capture in this way has made all kinds of media possible, from live-capture stage performances to interactive experiences.

In this paper, we go over the functions and usages of various performance capture systems in detail, and we explore two real-time projects: the Siren Real-Time Performance video released at GDC 2018, and SIGGRAPH 2018 Real-Time Live!
