Get Your Game Running on DirectX 12 at GDC!

By Chance Ivey

You may have seen the Elemental and Infiltrator projects from Epic running on DirectX 12 late last year, and now is your opportunity to see your Unreal Engine project utilizing the newest version of the API!

If you’re attending GDC and have access to the expo, you’re invited to swing by the Microsoft booth where the DirectX team will host the DirectX 12 Quick Start Challenge, a section of stations ready to test your packaged Windows 64-bit project with DirectX 12. Microsoft will have engineers on site to help get you running and answer any questions. All participants will be entered into a raffle for an Epic swag bag to be given out at the show, so make sure to check it out!

To simplify the exercise at the show floor, we ask you to bring in your project based on the unmodified engine and packaged for Windows 64-bit. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Create a new folder on your computer.
  2. Open your project in Unreal Engine 4.6.
  3. From the toolbar, select File -> Package -> Settings.
    1. Uncheck “Use PAK”.
    2. Change the configuration to Shipping.
  4. From the toolbar, select File -> Package -> Windows -> Windows 64.
  5. In the dialog box, provide the path the folder you created in Step 1 and select OK.
  6. Verify your content works.
  7. Copy the entire folder to a USB device and bring it with you to GDC!

Not able to attend GDC? Feel free to apply for the DirectX 12 early access with Unreal Engine 4 here and give it a try.

See y’all next week!
